Geneva-based End Human Trafficking Now (EHTN) has announced a global inquiry into the most pervasive form of human trafficking, the practice of buying and selling Twitter followers. “How can the management of Twitter and the Twitter community continue to condone this practice by their silence? The only way to stop the trafficking in Twitter followers is to cut off the demand at the roots” stated Carina Arkless of EHTRN, “Of course the sellers must be punished to the fullest extent of the law, but we as a society must ensure that the very idea of purchasing followers as a commodity is truly shameful”
“This egregious example of human trafficking must be stopped at all costs” exclaimed United Nation Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Executive Director Yuri Fedotov. When Director Fedotov was informed that the vast majority of trafficked followers were fictitious, he responded dismissively, “Denying basic human rights to the fictional is a violation of the UN Charter”.
